Carrying Freedom Forward: A Juneteenth Celebration of Community and Collective Action

On June 20, Kismet of Kings welcomed community members to Carrying Freedom Forward, a Juneteenth celebration dedicated to honoring the past while exploring what freedom requires of us today. The event brought together residents from across New Jersey for an afternoon of dialogue, artistic expression, political education, and community building.

Throughout the day, attendees engaged with a diverse group of speakers, panelists, and presenters, including mental health professionals, educators, artists, community organizers, and advocates, each offering their unique perspective on what it means to build healthier and more empowered communities.

Executive Director Lewis Spears participated in the Walk With Our Youth men's panel, joining other community leaders in an honest conversation about mentorship, manhood, and the responsibility adults have to guide the next generation. The discussion encouraged young people to ask questions, share their perspectives, and engage directly with leaders committed to their growth.

The program also featured a thought-provoking presentation by photographer Duquann Sweeney, whose work explored dignity, beauty, and the stories embedded within everyday life. Community members also participated in a Know Your Rights workshop led by Spirit of Liberation, discussions on international solidarity and political prisoners, and a women's panel that highlighted the experiences, leadership, and needs of Black and Brown women and girls.

Carrying Freedom Forward reflected Kismet of Kings' belief that true freedom is an ongoing practice built through education, creativity, service, and collective responsibility. By bringing together voices from across the community, the event created opportunities to learn from one another, strengthen relationships, and continue the work of building a more informed and connected Jersey City.
